SAFETY TIPS FOR HALLOWEEN

OCTOBER 2023

Raise your hand if you’re like me and shake your head when you see Christmas displays out in October? SLOW DOWN people! We are just now getting adjusted to the "back to school routine". However, we Michiganders have a very special thing about us…spirit! Whether it’s our furious Detroit Lions, the Thanksgiving Day Parade or the best holiday ever HALLOWEEN, we show our spirit. A holiday where make-believe comes to life and families can celebrate. It is a nice distraction from the disappearing sunny, warm days. We might be a little biased, but there is no better state to celebrate Halloween than Michigan. By October 31st, most of the leaves have fallen and temperatures are perfect to unpack our leather boots, puffer vests and hoodies.

Here at South Street Auto Care, we believe in community. With that said, we have compiled a list of suggestions to keep you, your family and your neighborhood safe this Halloween night.

Stay until the end to get your freebie, compliments of South Street Auto Care.

Preparation is key to any event’s success.

  • Pre-plan your trick or treat route (print out a map if you want to get really serious), with minimal zig zagging and street crossing
  • Stick to your neighborhood time ordinance for trick-or-treating hours
    • Rochester Hills 6pm-8pm
    • Rochester 6pm-8pm
    • Washington Twp 6pm-8pm
    • Shelby Twp 6pm-8pm
  • Children 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult. One adult for every two children
  • Children 12 and older should always go with a buddy. Ensure any tracking is activated for devices with GPS
  • Make sure children that are non-verbal or with disabilities have their home phone number with them. This tip has helped many autistic children reunite with caretakers
  • Only go up to homes that are well lit
  • NEVER enter a stranger’s home or backyard
  • Wear bright colors, reflective clothing /make up. Additional options are flashlights, head lamps & glow gear
  • Wear costumes that are the appropriate size (you don’t want to trip because a cap or princess gown is too long)
  • Avoid vision blocking costume accessories such as masks. Look for a makeup alternative for Halloween night
  • Cross roadways at crosswalks only. Avoid running in the street or jumping out from behind cars or any obstructions.
  • Don’t feel obligated to go out Halloween Night. There are many alternatives. Such as community events, trunk or treats, pumpkin patches, parades and more
    • Check out your local library, chamber of commerce or local Facebook groups for upcoming events.
  • Ensure your property is safe and lit up if you plan to stay home to pass out candy
  • Once home, wash hands. Get rid of any possible germs you may have encountered.
  • Oldie but goodie, check your children’s candy 100% before digging in. Dispose of any unwrapped or tampered goodies
    • If you feel like any goodies have been tampered with please contact your local police department.
    • Rochester Police Department: 248-651-9621
  • Sit down with your children a few days before Halloween to discuss the plan
  • Hold a quick huddle just before departure, reminding each other of your trick or treat plans
  • Stop by South Street Auto Care to get your complimentary GLOW GEAR courtesy of SSAC*
